After turning Bodega Montes into one of the top wineries in Chile, the family journeyed across the mountains to try their hand in Argentina.

Kaiken refers to the birds in the opening shot. The story of how they brave the high passes of the Andes to migrate between Chile and Argentina is quite apropos.

As a goose flies the two properties are not much further apart than the length of the Mendoza wine producing region. Realizing that the mountains in the way do more than make travel inconvenient, Montes and Kaiken employ different techniques but the same high standards..

The area that the winery is in has been producing high quality grapes for generations. Some of the vines that were on the property when they bought it are a bit diseased and dying off. Before they perish they gift the winemaker with some of the most intense fruit on the entire property.

A perfect example of how limiting yield and stressing the vine will result in the best possible juice, even if it is at a cost most wineries would never willingly pay.

The angel that graces the Montes and Kaiken wines (and now the NapaAngel wines) is a semi whimsical nod to the angel that must be watching over them to have given them so much bounty.

A statue of the Angel stands in the Kaiken winery, looking over the good works before her, seemingly giving her benediction.

For the wine tourist Kaiken may be one of the ultimate places to visit. With enough notice the winery can arrange for your group to play at blending your own wines. The winning blend is bottled and presented to the participants. Asado classes, wine painting lessons, even horseback riding can be arranged. All with reservations for manageable sized groups.
