Clos de Chacras

Chacras de Coria is a tiny village that has become part of the sprawling suburban landscape of Mendoza. Completely engulfed by the growth of the region, it has still managed to keep a great deal of its charm. Artists have reclaimed the town to make it one of the most desirable towns to live, and to visit.

Back in the days when wine in Argentina was produced in huge quantity without regard to quality, this winery was typical of the factory like bodegas that pumped out train cars worth of wine and sent it off to be consumed with no more regard than that with which it was made.

Giant cement tanks were the main foundation of this bodega, designed to vinify the most wine possible in the most economic way. As the fashion pendulum swung towards wines of note, this pantheon to mediocrity shut down, only to be repurposed decades later as a boutique winery and restaurant, exemplifying the chic barrio in which it resides.

The same giant tanks that once held wine in bulk have been torn apart to allow bottles to rest in their naturally cool confines. What was once designed to create a sea of wine has been carefully altered to allow the production of the minuscule amounts that are the hallmark of a quality conscious facility.

With plenty of room to spare it was apparent that a restaurant would fit neatly with the concept of the new winery and so an eatery that is as modern as the wine production, is housed in a section of the building that pays homage to its roots.

Clos de Chacras is a bit hard to find, hidden away down a side street and completely bereft of signs, but once you find the huge pink building on its sprawling grounds, there is no mistaking that you have arrived.

Lunch at Clos de Chacras restaurant (adjacent to the winery) is a relaxed affair. The atrium environment is conducive to enjoying glass after glass of wine, as you sample the well thought out menu.

A framed section of the original adobe structure speaks to the history of the building, while copious awards adorning the homey fireplace mantel are a tribute to the current endeavors. Cushy chairs make for an informal tasting area and the restaurant proper marries a bistro chic with an inviting warm atmosphere.
