Castles pop up in the last place you expect to find them. On the road to Tupungato in the Uco Valley there is the town of San Jose, little more than a speed bump with a single road heading off towards the mountains.
Down this unassuming dirt road you will find a detour that points towards the Bodega Bombal. The sign is rustic, and other than vineyards there is nothing that gives you a hint of what is to come.
At the bodega entrance you can see an aging, rather unassuming cement winery. Just another of the hundreds in the Mendoza area. No sign that you are about to enter a fantasy world.
As you leave the winery behind you realize that you are strolling through an exquisite park. Plane trees form a canopy over a rarely used entrance, fit for royal carriages.
As you turn a corner the mature and perfectly placed trees part to give you your first glimpse of a 75 year old mansion with hints of Europe in the architecture.
Complete with towers and turrets, the word castle comes unbidden to your lips. Not only is this the summer home of the Bombal family, for a fortunate few, this is a perfect place to stay.
The sprawling gardens were designed by Carlos Tahys, the same landscape architect who created
the Parque San Martín in Mendoza. That these grounds were blessed by the hand of a master, there can be no doubt.
Just steps away from the manor house the old, but wonderfully functional, bodega awaits your visit. Here you can taste the wines that are made in a traditional style from some of the highest vineyards in the region.
The cool nights and long growing season gives the grapes a ripeness and intensity that few can match. Aging the wines until they are soft and ready to drink ensures that every bottle of Bodega Bombal’s Estancia Ancón wines are memorable.
The word “estancia” can probably be best translated as “ranch” but “sprawling estate” does it more justice. With their own orchards and farms to source from, hotel guests will enjoy the freshest meals in the area.
